Northern Artists - OPT IN collaboration

We are proud to announce our collaboration with OPT IN, a brilliant charity who I'll tell you a little about below

I think the best way for me to introduce OPT IN is by sharing this excerpt from their mission statement:

The OPT IN mission is simple; to share the knowledge and skills of our health care staff with partner hospitals in a number of developing countries.
— OPT IN

OPT IN work tirelessly to deliver on this. You can see it for yourself when you look around their website. Their effortlessness in fundraising for and visiting disadvantaged communities makes a great impact. Imagine life in Britain without good health services and hospitals. Further to their mission statement, they describe that:

"The aim is to deliver training which will result in sustained improvements in the health services in the partner country so improving the health of its population. The agenda for this training is based on local needs and is defined by our partners."

Now, its not quite on par with what these fine people work to prevent, but the ol' industrial English North were once mucky n' dirty n' 'orrible. But that's barely even a reason for this collaboration. OPT IN need as much support as possible, so to help them achieve that we've teamed up with them on our big project for this half of 2014. We want to sell as much art as we can so that we can give OPT IN as much money as possible, so they can continue on their marvellous mission.

We hope you'll agree that theirs is a fine cause, and we're proud to support them. If you can join us for any and all of our Northern Artists events we'd love it:

  1. Northern Artists Talk - Friday 28th March, 7pm
  2. Northern Artists Exhibition PREVIEW EVENING - Friday 11th April, 7pm
  3. Northern Artists Exhibition - Saturday 12th - Saturday 26th April

Glynis Mills is one of our most distinguished regular exhibitors, as well as one of our greatest friends. In the past, her work has been some of the best loved we've ever had and its easy to see why.

The aim of me posting this blog is just to highlight the fact that we have this exhibition coming up.

If you want to read a bit about Glynis herself, please click here (opens a new window). In this short blog post, I just want to introduce you to some of her images.

On the right we have an example of an image that has been well received previously at Gallery 42, and one which displays Glynis' love for horses.

The aptly named companions seem acutely aware of our presence and they are tame and friendly towards us. This wonderful, enchanting print will, like the other images, be available in the exhibition. On the preview evening Glynis herself will be available to discuss her work.

We hope you manage to make it to the exhibition during its 3 week run - in particular, we would love for anyone interested to come along to the informal preview evening on Friday 7th February at 7pm (it doesn't matter if you're late - these things run all night!)

Here on our left we have a lovely image of Gerty (or "GERTRUDE!" when she's naughty); yes we're aware it isn't an actual beach ball she's happily clamping.

What makes this image so enchanting is the relationship between owner and pet - between Glynis and Gerty. They seem inseparable - I cannot recall more than once when Glynis has come to see us without her!

So much of the magic of Glynis' art is to do with the relationship we feel with the animals she portrays, and in understanding their beauty.

It seems about time to update you on our current exhibition...

Now into its third week, we are delighted to inform you all that we have extended the date of the last day of the exhibition to be 3 weeks later on the 28th of December!

This is of course a marvellous thing, so I am here with some of the highlights from the exhibition, with something for everyone

POP was the brainchild of Ian, who wanted to create an exhibition based more around the framing than the art itself. This ethos is a different one to that which we have implemented in the past, however we feel that it has worked quite well - as bespoke framers, it is a wonderful opportunity for us to show our frames as art themselves.

Of course, this may leave some of you doubting how much we care about the art.

A lot... Is the short answer.

We have spent a lot of time sourcing and carefully framing and preparing select images for our exhibition, which came to celebrate an expanded field of nostalgia and not just the immediately obvious hallmarks of 'pop' in art (Pop Art).

We have had some wonderful comments on our current show. Let me share with you some highlights.

Andy Warhol, Marilyn Monroe. various unsigned prints

Monroe by Warhol

I am sure no one needs an introduction to this iconic Warhol silkscreen series, created shortly after Marilyn Monroe's death. We have 9 of these, all available separately should you wish to purchase them that way. Price on enquiry, including a smart black frame with each image.

Assorted exhibition pieces

These pieces mark the entrance to our exhibition. (I myself have my eye on the Warhol soup can), summing up the contents of our show nicely. Other similar items include a recently sold photograph of the late Kurt Cobain and an Elvis cushion.

Assorted images - all available separately. Prices on enquiry.

© Peter Blake. Signed High-Quality Giclee print. £5,500

Peter Blake

This is the centrepiece of the exhibition: an astonishingly high resolution, brilliant quality signed Giclee print from Peter Blake. Immaculately presented in a thick wooden frame, matching the greens in the picture, this package is £5,500. We have two other Peter Blakes available also, one of which is signed album art for The Who. A great image indeed.

POP is open 6 days a week, 9-5, and until 12:30pm Wednesdays. Entry is free.

We hope to see you soon, and don't forget to come along to our Dalí talk on Friday 13th December hosted and delivered by me!

Nearly here!

BRASSAI  - What a magical image!

Our next exhibition is nearly upon us!

Its not long until our exhibition of Pop Art, poster art and celebrity culture opens - here's a little piece to update you.

The next exhibition held at Gallery  42 will be the last one before the year is out, so we've decided to celebrate a variety of things loosely based on celebrities, branded culture and pop and posterous art. Less formal than our other exhibitions, we hope that this exhibition will make a wide variety of imagery accessible and interpretable for our audience.

Aspects of this exhibition will relate to the talk Steve is giving on Dalí (click here), in which he discusses Dalí and other misunderstandings within 20th Century Art. Figures spoken about will include Picasso, Lichtenstein and Warhol - the latter two with work (prints) in this exhibition.

There will also be some original material, including some from me, which is nice.

More info soon to come. We look forward to seeing you.

The exhibition opens with a preview evening this Friday night (22nd Nov 2013). All welcome - 7pm start. Light refreshments and live music.
